UPPER SCHOOL MUSICAL IS AN ADAPTATION OF "THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA"

If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and The Pea," you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess to have a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Once Upon a Mattress will be performed in the Lewis Theater November 12, 13 and 14. This musical will be enjoyed by students of all ages, so why not plan a full family outing?!

No one in the fairytale kingdom can marry until Prince Dauntless (Adin Segall, Landon '19) finds a Princess who can pass his mother's preposterous tests. Queen Aggravain (Camille Blum '16) is assisted by her nefarious Wizard (Dora Segall '16) as they invent impossible tasks for the princesses to complete. Lady Larken (Elise Lovett '16) is particularly eager to marry Sir Harry (Ben Gilbert, Landon '16) before the newest member of their family arrives. When Princess Winnifred (Olivia Herlein '18) swims the moat to meet the Prince she defies all expectations of how a princess should appear and behave. Through kindness and positivity she wins the hearts of the Prince and all the Lords and Ladies in the fairytale kingdom. The King (Sebastian Kanai-Wells, Landon '18) and Jesters (Andrea Sloter '16 and Samantha Noland '17) conspire with the Minstrels (Maryam Gilanshah '17 and Caroline Smith '18) to discover the latest test and ensure that Princess Winnifred will pass.

Technical Director Mark Robinson guides a team of twelve hard-working student technicians, headed by Stage Manager Sophie Mills '16, who transform the Lewis Theater through scenery, lights, and sound effects. Elisa Perez provides costume design and Nick Arancibia provides lighting design. Mary Jane Pagenstecher is Musical Director and Choreographer while Jon Hansen directs the Pit Orchestra and Dr. Yee Von Ng provides piano accompaniment. Drama Director Elizabeth Zitelli leads this group of over 70 artists in mounting this delightful production.
