AP Art History teacher Dr.Wilson shared with The Scene about a recent trip on Sunday, October 30 to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. to witness artwork by contemporary Icelandic artist, Ragnar Kjartansson. Here are some insights from Dr. Wilson about the art trip:
We went to see a show by contemporary Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, who has built an international reputation over the past decade, particularly for his work at the Venice Biennale. This is his first major retrospective in the U.S. and has been garnering critical acclaim. It includes video (multiple screens in a single room), paintings, music, and a some performance art. The pieces both evoke and parody nineteenth-century Romanticism; they are simultaneously comic, ironic, and deeply touching. I think that the girls enjoyed it -- very different than anything they've seen before -- and they are now working on a writing assignment that asks them to compare one of Kjartannson's works of their choosing with any piece that we've studied in class.
