Scroll, Holton-Arms' literary and arts magazine, and its online version Scrolling have won the Gold Crown Award in the High School Gold Hybrid Magazine category given by Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for 2017. CSPA's Gold Crown Award is the highest award given to student publications.

Scroll+Scrolling Advisor, Holton English teacher, Ms. Melinda Salata, and Scrolling Technical Advisor, Director of Digital Media and Databases, Mrs. Liz Gouldman, took six Upper School students: Anjali Berdia '17 and Kiki Adams '18 from Scribbler, Alex Steelman '17 and Greer Knebel '18 from Scribe, and Rebecca Chan '17 and Emily Shiroma '17 from Scroll to the CSPA conference and awards held at Columbia University in New York City.

During the conference, the group attended workshops and presentations which covered a wide range of topics from best practices and use of software such as InDesign to listening to professional journalists discuss ethics and legal obligations in the age of "fake news." "The conference is a unique opportunity to step away from the day-to-day obligations of school work and focus on publication production. It allows the girls time to brain storm and digest feedback about how to create an award winning publication in high school. It is our hope as advisors to use this opportunity to expose the girls to what other schools are doing and gain insight into what is possible," described Mrs. Gouldman.

At the invitation of CSPA, Ms. Salata and Mrs. Gouldman, also gave a presentation, "Wholly Hybrid: Widening the Scope," during which they discussed what have they have learned and where they want to go in the future, especially given the continued pace of technological innovations on the web. Their talk focused on how to choose content connecting print and web versions, how changing digital format affects layout, and what new skills their editors will focus on next.

On the last day of the conference, Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the CSPA, presented Scroll+Scrolling their fourth consecutive Gold Crown Award for High School Gold Hybrid Magazine.

Congratulations!
