Greetings All,

I hope that your week has been a good one. It would be misleading to think that Friday would be less active than any other day on the Holton-Arms campus. There were indeed activities galore. Senior Spirit Day has come to represent a festive way to bid our graduating seniors the very best. When you add the activities of Field Day you suddenly have a euphoric overload. That observation provides a segue to share an interesting perspective.

When devouring your third slice of pizza before 10 a.m. , for some odd reason the mind begins to reflect. Yes I know, but bear with me for a moment. In the Head's Notes for this week, Susanna offered us an amazing insight into the unique experience of Mosaic. I find it interesting to acknowledge how the whole concept of community has changed. My pizza epiphany does not necessarily refer to defining a community within a distinct context. Rather, this acknowledgement seeks to examine a more generic standard in discussing basic human interactions. I can recall growing up on a long city block where despite that physical distance, every family knew one another. Albeit many years ago, it is rather easy to recount every distinct nuance associated with each house. There was the retired school teacher who baked a "wicked" coconut custard pie. I remember the stories of the decorated World War II veteran who thrilled us with tales of his battle encounters. Hmmm, in hindsight it was probably untrue that he actually planned the D-Day invasion by himself. One of my best childhood friends taught the neighborhood boys the early concept of "girl power". She was blazing fast and could outrun any kid (boy or girl) west of Georgia Avenue. Trust me, even my new Chuck Taylor's were no match for her.

Fast forward to more contemporary times. For over 12 years, I lived in a small subdivision and on the day that we moved, I only knew the names of three neighbors. Oddly enough, I hardly ever saw many of my fellow residents. Some of that is contributed to working odd shifts, however much of it corresponds to the hectic pace of our daily lives. Between working, commuting and everything in between, direct daily social interactions are no longer a given. It is no coincidence that the rise in social media platforms have sought to fill that void. In this accelerated modern era, perhaps it is easier to simply connect with others from the comfort of one's own home. Still, I miss the camaraderie that once typified so many neighborhoods. Is it possible things have now come full cycle and a past sense of community has returned ? I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

The weekend building hours for April 29-30, 2017 are posted below. For all of the efforts dedicated towards supporting this week's numerous activities, I continue to offer a collective note of gratitude. In closing, please allow me to also extend congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2017.

On behalf of my good friends in the Facilities Department, I would like to wish all of my colleagues a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Thank you everyone and take care.

Ken
