Holton's crew team is having a wonderful spring season! April 30 brought Holton its first MD State Championship win in the first varsity four! On a sunny but breezy morning the boat consisting of Ava Mendlesohn '19, Anneliese King '17, Kiki Adams '18, Delaney Bond '19, and Ariel Booker '17 rowed well through their heats, winning their heat over Whitman, Holy Cross, Gunston, and IND in a time of 5:41.5, the fastest time in all the heats. As the wind picked up in the afternoon for the finals the girls thought nothing of the greater challenge and sailed through the race leaving Holy Cross, Elizabeth Seton, Churchill, Walter Johnson, and Whitman in their wake, winning with a time of 6:42.8!
The novice four, Amy Ballard '19, Aisling Mockler '20, Sofia Gerlein '20, Nina Carter '19 and Emery Cilluffo '20, had a similarly exciting day! They, too, raced hard in their heat for a resounding first place finish over Whitman, Walter Johnson, Holy Cross and Roland Park with a time of 6:01.8; also the fastest time of all the heats. The finals in the afternoon while windy were no problem for the novice four either. They also had another resounding win over Gunston, NDP, GDS, Whitman, and Roland Park with a time of 7:09.0!
This past weekend, the team competed at the Washington Metro Interscholastic Rowing Association Championship (WMIRA) in Georgetown. The rain earlier in the week made the conditions fast, but wouldn't keep the team from achieving greatness! All of Holton's boats advanced to race in the grand finals and the varsity and novice four won the championship! This victory means an automatic bid for the varsity four to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (nationals) Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27 in New Jersey. Before heading to Nationals the girls will travel this weekend to Philadelphia, PA for the Stotesbury Cup. Be sure to check out the crew team page for the most up to date schedule and results. Congratulations crew and good luck the rest of the season!
