Our fourth graders have been continuing their collaboration in the Level Up Village Program and recently took on a design tech project and built sustainable flashlights using Tinkercad and 3D printing technology. This collaboration was in part with the Global Inventors Program, where the girls studied and communicated with their counterparts in Ghana and Zimbabwe about big ideas (such as electricity access) to day-to-day ideas (such as what they like to eat or games they like to play) as shared by Grade 4 teacher Ms. Tintle.

This specific project involved collaborations with Design Technology and Social Studies. The students used these disciplines to fully emerge themselves in learning the full purpose of this project and studied electricity access and the engineering process of building a flashlight. Through the Level Up Village platform, Holton students contacted their counterparts in Ghana and Zimbabwe and created a forum of ideas. Lower School Design Technology teacher Ms. Baily expressed, "I was completely amazed by the creations many of the girls designed for their flashlight components: a photovoltaic cell, a batter pack, two small LED lights, and a switch. The flashlight can obtain its energy from the sun, or from the batteries."
