Forty seven girls from Holton-Arms' sixth, seventh, and eighth grades participated in the 18th Annual Washington Metropolitan Private Middle School Swimming Championships. They faced 34 other teams from around the Washington, D.C. area and as far afield as Richmond, VA.
This annual meet is known as one of the fastest Middle School meets on the East Coast. Former Olympians have participated and many Division I collegiate swimmers. This year's meet was certainly one for the record books as ten meet records were broken! Holton eighth grader Sophie Duncan '22 took down five-time gold medalist, Katie Ledecky's record in the 200 free, beating Ledecky's time by 3.49 seconds! Holton's 200 Medley Relay team of Duncan, Sarah Chin '22, Ella Myers '22, and Sofia Thomas '22 set a new meet record previously set by the 2016 Holton team. The 200 Free Relay record also set by the 2016 Holton team was broken by Duncan, Myers, Thomas, and Alexandra Zupnik '23. Duncan also set a new school record in the 100 IM! Two Holton records were also broken, Myers set on in the 50 back and Duncan in the 50 free. Congratulations girls!
"I speak for the entire coaching staff when I say how proud we are of this team and their performance. If this meet is a glimpse of things to come, not only at Holton, but in the area, look out. To have ten meet records broken, records that were held by Division I athletes and Olympians! The future of swimming in this area thriving!" commented Coach Westerberg.
It's fair to say that Holton dominated the meet, winning with a total of 422 points followed by Collegiate School (254) and Stone Ridge (210). To read more about the meet, click here.
