NASA Planetary Geochemist Dr. Jennifer Stern '94 skyped with Ms. Eby's science class to discuss her career working for NASA in developing measurements on planetary surfaces and studying the chemistry of Mars.
Dr. Stern always had a passion for the sciences and started her career studying geology. She furthered her studies in meteorites and became a post-doctoral fellow at NASA Ames Research Center and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
As a planetary geochemist for NASA today, one of her main projects focuses on the Curiosity Rover which landed on Mars in 2012. She shared pictures of the rover taking "selfies" from one of its 17 cameras and discussed how the rover captures findings on Mars. Dr. Stern's talk concluded Ms. Eby's unit on Astrobiology where the girls studied the solar system, habitable vs. inhabitable environments, and also did some creative writing on finding abstract life on different planets.
