As part of the school's Hispanic Heritage Month festivities, Middle and Upper School Spanish teacher Diego Bautista-Melero visited Lower School assembly this week to introduce students to the history of castanets.
As Mr. Bautista-Melero shared with the girls, the Spanish word for castanets is "castañuelas," and they were traditionally made from the wood of the chestnut, or "castaña." The ancient instrument is thought to have originated in the western Indian peninsula, before traveling west to Europe with nomadic tribes. They grew to become an important part of music and dances in many cultures, particularly the folkloric dances of Spain.
Mr. Bautista-Melero showed students videos of several styles of dance using castanets, and even showed off a few of his own flamenco dance moves. His style and enthusiasm thoroughly entertained students.
