Congratulations to the varsity swimming & diving team for bringing home the first Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championship (METROs) title in school history! This also marks the first time that Holton has swept all three of its end-of-season championships, ISLs, WMPSSDLs, and METROs.
Athletic Director Julie Treadwell said, "This team and its coaches are what athletics is all about–teamwork, heart, resiliency, focus, and great spirit!! I am so proud to be part of this school and an athletic program with such amazing people!"
After winning last weekend's WMPSSDL Championships, Coach Graham Westerberg was up early the next morning setting his lineups for METROs. He knew his talented team would be in it, but they would have to keep swimming hard to earn it.
After Thursday's diving events, Holton was the only team to place three divers, giving them a leg up heading into Friday and Saturday. Getting through Friday with strong swims, they were well seeded going into the finals on Saturday evening.
Holton finished in the top three for eight different events, winning three of them. Senior captain Olivia Jubin '19 won the 100-yard freestyle (51.46); the relay team made up of Jing-E Tan '19, Rachel Blackwell '20, Jillian Johnson '20, and Tatum Zupnik '20 won the 200-yard medley (1:44.82); and the team of Valerie Mello '21, Zupnik, Sophie Duncan '22, and Jubin won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.75).
"I have had so much fun coaching this year," said Coach Westerberg. "This team is special. I don't just say this because they have won everything. I say that because it was a unique mix of talent and age. They kids worked so hard and deserve every bit of the success they had. We, as coaches, could not be more proud."
Come out and support the girls at their final swim meet of the season on Tues., Feb. 12 at 4:15 p.m. against Paul VI High School (at Holton)!
