Holton Drama Backstage Bash

Wednesday, September 7

6:30-7:30 p.m. – Followed by:

7:30-8:00 p.m. Info Session for Students and Parents

What is it?

The bash is a no-pressure opportunity to get to know other students who participate in drama at Holton as well as the Drama Faculty. The bash is commitment-free; just show up and meet people. (Students who come to the Backstage Bash are NOT committing themselves to audition or serve in tech roles.)

What do we do?

Hang out and talk. Eat pizza. Drink soda. Play games. Eat cookies.

Will I have to talk or perform?

We usually spend a few moments sitting in a circle and when we ask folks to share their name/grade and favorite ice cream flavor (or similar random fact.) Most of the time you'll talk to other students in small groups. It's a good way to meet students in other grades.

Where is it?

In the Scene Shop – walk down the hallway past the Chorus Room and the Dressing Rooms all the way to the end and up the steps. Or walk down the stairs in the Lewis Theater and onto the stage.

Who comes?

All Holton and Landon students in grades 9-12 are invited. Usually 20-30 students show up. A few Landon guys have been known to attend. The Drama Club leadership and Drama Department faculty will also be in attendance.

What if I've already participated in drama - do I need to come?

Yes. You have a job to welcome the newbies and answer their questions. You're the people they want to get to know!

Okay. I'm in. What do I do?

  • Coordinate with your parents so that they plan to join you at 7:30 when we'll move into the chorus room and have an official info session with schedules and other information about this year's shows.

What if I'm super interested in drama but can't come?

It's a good idea to send me an email letting me know about your interest. I'll follow up the meeting with an e-mail to all students with the details you missed. If you write to me in advance I can follow up with you personally. You can also speak to Drama Club officers: President Cecilia Parker '17, Vice President Maryam Gilanshah '17, or Secretaries Natalie Bock '18 and Charlotte Koonce '18.

See you for pizza and fun after the second day of school at the Backstage Bash!

Greetings All,

I hope that your week has been a good one. It is hard to imagine that the last week of Creative Summer 2016 is approaching us. It sounds cliché, but where does the time go? Both national conventions have now concluded and we eagerly await the arrival of the Summer Olympics. Is there a human being on this planet who can beat Usain Bolt ? Perhaps there is, stay tuned my friends.

The weekend building hours for July 30-31, 2016 are posted below. Please note that the building will be closed on Sunday, July 31. On Saturday, July 30, the building hours are officially from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. However, there are provisions in place that evening for the 6:30 p.m. departure of the Global Ed trip to India. We would like to wish all of our school community members the very best in their exciting journey. We look forward to following your blogs and other avenues of 21st-century communications. Hmm, I am trying to recall when was the last time that I actually wrote a letter ? No, no I am not talking about an e-mail, but rather the John Hancock pen to paper variety. While technology continues to rapidly shape our modes of dialogue, there will always be something distinctly personal about a handwritten letter.

On behalf of everyone in the Facilities Department, I would like to wish all of my colleagues a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Thank you and take care.

Ken

Greetings All,

I hope that your week has gone well. Today marks the closing of the Creative Summer 2016 sessions. I know that everyone will join me in acknowledging a successful summer that was enjoyed by so many campers. A "tip of the hat" is extended to Callie, Mary and the entire Creative Summer staff. Congratuations on a job well done by all.

The weekend building hours for August 6-7, 2016 are posted below. We will be offering building hours on Saturday. Please note that we are seeking to close the building on Sunday. Hopefully this will allow for a little infrastructure decompression. That statement simply translates into a plea for everyone to pause and exhale after a busy six weeks. You may have observed that the transition period from camp mode to school mode has already begun. That work will continue in the upcoming days and that transformation will be amazing. To everyone who makes that goal an achievable one, we extend to you a tremendous note of gratitude.

On behalf of my good friends in the Facilities Department, I would like to wish all of my colleagues a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Thank you everyone and take care.

Ken

WEEKEND BUILDING HOURS FOR AUGUST 13-14, 2016

Greetings All,

I hope that your week has been a good one. Yes, you have seen the recent e-mails alerting us that things are moving full speed ahead towards the beginning of school. There are indeed many projects taking place throughout the school community resulting in numerous work areas. Accordingly, once again we are attempting to minimize pedestrian traffic inside of the building. You will notice that there will be limited building hours offered on Saturday, August 13th. That time period is in support of a previously scheduled Adjunct Music lesson occurring on that day. Please also note that the building will be closed on Sunday, August 14th. It is predicted to be something like 200 degrees over the weekend. The remedy to that fearful forecast is to simply relax, stay cool and enjoy these remaining break days.

Speaking of relaxation, the Summer Olympics have certainly been enjoyable to watch. The U.S. domination in swimming is absolutely incredible. I heard that there are some new sports planned for the 2020 Tokyo Games. Among those new events are skateboarding and surfing. Wow, how about that? If they ever approve "rock, paper, scissors" even I might become a future Olympian.

On behalf of my good friends in the Facilities Department, I would like to thank everyone for your ongoing cooperation and support.

Take care and have a wonderful weekend.

Ken

In Memoriam: Charles P. Lord, Former Head of School

It is with deep sadness that we share that Charles Pillsbury Lord, Head of School at Holton-Arms from 1987 to 1992, passed away on August 17, 2016.

Mr. Lord came to Holton-Arms from St. Timothy's School, a private boarding and day school for girls in Stevenson, Maryland, where he was Headmaster. As the fourth Head of School at Holton-Arms, Mr. Lord oversaw several initiatives that contributed to Holton being the excellent school it is today. Under his tenure, the sale of 21.5 acres of the original Granger property took place. Somewhat controversial at the time, this sale allowed for an increase to the School's endowment as well as the construction of the James Whittier Lewis Student Activities Center which included the 400 seat theater, double gymnasium, and six-lane swimming pool.

Mr. Lord was also focused on promoting multiculturalism and equity at Holton. In 1989, the School began a year-long study of diversity as part of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Multicultural Education Assessment. His plans also included the completion of Brown House, the child development center for Holton faculty and staff children which opened in 1991.

Perhaps his most lasting legacy on the culture at Holton, is his initiation of the first Convocation in the fall of 1989. Struck by the cultural diversity at Holton, Mr. Lord asked that the flags of the forty-nine nations represented by the student body, faculty, and staff, be carried into the amphitheater setting the tone as the entire School came together for songs, addresses, and readings. An empathetic, generous, and proud man, Mr. Lord described his efforts saying, "We are preparing students for life in the twenty-first century . . . We need to teach our students the self-confidence and the independence to think creatively, to question, and to challenge, and this requires a broad exposure to the thoughts and issues of all civilizations and the encouragement of a skeptical mind. This is a very significant and exciting voyage, one that I believe will strengthen our school and enrich us all."

His words are as fitting today as they were then. Holton-Arms is honored to have had such a forward-thinking visionary as its Head of School. Mr. Lord, you will be missed.

For those who wish to make a gift in Mr. Lord's memory, please consider supporting the Holton Fund. Gifts can be made online here and we ask that you please list Mr. Lord's name in the section entitled "This gift is given in memory of."

Greetings Everyone,

I hope that your week was a good one. It certainly appears that our beloved school community is once again alive and well. However, on second thought we probably often wonder if our campus is ever absent of any activity. We know that we have enlisted your patience throughout the course of the summer during numerous facilities related projects. Once again on behalf of the entire Facilities Department I want to express a collective note of gratitude. Some of those "fruits of labor" are already evident as exemplified by our newly resurfaced parking areas.

On behalf of our good friends in the Facilities Department, I would like to wish all of our colleagues a safe and enjoyable weekend. In closing I would be remiss if I did not extend a very special greeting to all of our new faculty and staff members. Welcome aboard all.

Thank you and take care.

Over the summer, seven Upper and Middle Schoolers took the initiative to engage locally in a two-week experimental Chinese immersion summer camp held at Chinese Cultural and Community Center (CCACC) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. CCACC has a well-established presence in the Greater Washington area with permanent facilities for language, arts and culture, and sports and fitness programs.

Holton students showed their eagerness to learn kung fu, folk dance, Beijing opera, brush painting, arts and crafts, and to practice their fluency in Chinese. Based on the evaluation, CCACC will roll out this first-ever program to other independent schools.

On the last day, Chinese Language Teacher Dr. Liao joined the audience to see students performed folk dance and Beijing opera. The students are Annika Chidambaran '21, Lusya Engen '21, Alanna Finn '22, Kirsten Vanderhorst '22, Keshini Maynard '20, Stephani Weiss '20, and Su Shen Ooi '20.
