A total of 16 Middle School students participated in the Sidwell Friends Model United Nations Conference this past Sat., Mar. 16. Three were honored as Outstanding Delegates, including two first-timers.
Novice Jinessa Miles '23 was the school's sole delegate to the US Senate committee on mass incarceration. She largely wrote the resolution that passed and earned Outstanding Delegate recognition for her work.
The school's other 15 participants were assigned to the European Union committee negotiating the terms of Brexit. "This was easily the best Middle School committee I have ever seen," says Model UN sponsor Gabrielle Loperfido. "The students had super creative and insightful solutions to some tricky logistical issues, especially around the issue of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and a common desire to preempt a resurgence of [ethno-nationalist conflict]."
Veteran Model UN member Kaitlyn Furbay '23 and newbie Sarah Ucuzoglu '23 were both named Outstanding Delegates for their role in the Brexit negotiations.
All told, six members of Holton's delegation had never attended a Model UN conference before.
Congratulations to our Outstanding Delegates and all attendees!
