Alice Young '91 was awarded Best in Show for InLight Richmond 2015 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). The two-day show, November 13-14, displayed outdoor, light-based art and performances throughout Richmond, Virginia. InLight Richmond attracts audiences to experience art outside of a building and engage the community within different neighborhoods in Richmond. The show is organized by 1708 Gallery, a non-profit arts organization, whose overall mission is to present exceptional new art and provide opportunities for artistic innovation. InLight Richmond in conjunction with 1708 Gallery has featured 190 artists and attracted more than 30,000 visitors to InLight Richmond for the past seven years.

From 1708 Gallery's perspective, Alice Young's work for InLight Richmond addresses the idea of systems, cycles, and the change of light within the season. Through a small cityscape "set" and a projected video of flocking birds, Alice Young explores the way memory effects the construction of both our psychic and physical environments. The imagery reflects the current mood of autumn days moving into dark wintry nights.

Alice is an accomplished artist. She studied at Ringling College of Art and Design and the New York Studio Residency Program; received an MFA from the University of Maryland; and an MA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Her work has been featured in multiple art exhibits since 1994 such as Santa Fe International New Media Festival, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, and more.

Currently, Alice lives in Cincinnati, Ohio and teaches at DAAP (Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning) at University of Cincinnati. She notes, "I tell my own high school arts students and college arts students- "find a way or make one"- nearly every day." We are happy to hear that Holton's influence still rings true for this accomplished artist.

Congratulations Alice! You can catch a glimpse of her media and visual artwork featured at InLight Richmond on her website, alicepixleyyoung.com
