I conducted a small scale experiment this August. For nine days, I did not read my Holton email. That may not sound momentous, but I don't think I've gone that long without reading my work email in at least five years. I am a huge believer in the importance of vacation, and I actually take all the vacation I'm due every year. That means I am out of the office for four weeks in the summer. It does not, however, mean that I don't work while I'm gone. How much I do varies from year to year, but there are always a few conference calls, emails to answer, and other tasks that demand attention. This summer, for example, I worked for several hours almost every morning for the first three weeks I was gone.
