Last week, I wrote about the importance of taking vacations. This week, I'm going to tackle the value of taking different kinds of breaks, ones during the course of a normal workday or week. As is true for vacations, the research definitively points to the importance of stopping periodically if we want to work at optimum levels.
Tony Schwartz and Catherine McCarthy of The Energy Project (whom we met last week) argue that productivity depends on maximizing our energy rather than simply putting in time. Maintaining high energy levels demands that we recharge through breaks. "Intermittent breaks for renewal," they explain, "result in higher and more sustainable performance."
