Lower, Middle, and Upper School Chinese teacher Dr. Liao shared with The Scene a recent trip that the eighth graders took to the Chinese Culture and Community Center.
On Monday, November 14, 2016, eighth graders in Chinese had a fun-filled local engagement trip to Chinese Culture and Community Center (CCACC) in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Mr. Zhu Chu Shan and the Washington Chinese Opera Institute was on site to give a talk on the art of facial make-up in Beijing Opera. Elaborate paints on an opera performer's face symbolize a character's role and temperament. Then, students learned gestures, footwork, and body movements to tell a story or to express actions such as opening a door or riding a horse. Students also learned various incorporated art forms such as martial arts, juggling, and acrobatics.
Students wrapped up their trip by having lunch and sharing stories with local residents and participating members of CCACC. The authentic lunch boxes are served by local Seven Seas Restaurant in Rockville, Maryland.Image may be NSFW.
