Upper School students viewed award-winning 13th documentary directed by Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated director, Ava DuVernay. DuVernay in 13th explores race and the connection between race and mass incarceration in the United States. The documentary is named after the 13th amendment, which outlawed slavery in the United States in 1865.
All Upper School students witnessed this documentary in the Lewis Theatre and afterwards, participated in breakout discussions lead by Zainab Jaffa, Mayah Gaines, Aisha Marston, Seymone Clarke, Natalie Bock, Brittany Hunter, Sasha Mills, Lexi Boo, Takara McLaughlin, Madison Harris, Taya Lowery-Williams, Becky Levinson, Savannah Chatman, Christine Padalino, Zenia Choksy, Julie Hirsch, Meghan Hunter, Raeva Syed, Erin Davis, Jaden Liu, Emily Shiroma, Lillian Baker, Acacia Overstreet, and Caitlyn Johnson. Kudos was also given to Amber Batra, Jessica Brown, Grace Daley, Gigi Gaskins, Sabrin Mohammednur, Laila Sayed, and Imani Wright for organizing and executing the viewing for the entire Upper School.
Grade 11 Class Dean Shay Squeglia expressed, "They were thoughtful, organized, and passionate [and] helped make the experience a thought-provoking and meaningful one!"
13th has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature for this upcoming Oscars on February 26, 2017.
