It was an exciting day on Wednesday, February 1 as the seventh graders explored Latin American culture and topography, and the eighth graders traveled to the United States Capitol for Outside-The-Box Day (OTB day).
The seventh graders divided into groups named after Incan Empire regions (Chinchasuyu, Antisuyu, Contisuyu, and Collasuyu) and participated in interdisciplinary activities. The girls created 3D topography maps, leyendas stories, and birthday glyphs to familiarize themselves with traditional Latin American culture. After immersing themselves in these activities, the seventh graders then traveled to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and visited the Inka Road: Engineering an Empire exhibit that explored all the aspects of the engineering and cultural impact of the Inca Road spanning over 20,000 miles through Ecuador, Columbia, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. After this learning experience, the girls wrapped up their day with the historical documentary, Breaking the Maya Code, which reveals the deep rooted secrets and hieroglyphics of the Mayan Empire.
The eighth graders had a wonderful OTB day at the United States Capitol in D.C. While at the U.S. Capitol, the eighth graders had a chance to meet fellow Holton alumna, Shelley Moore Capito '71. Senator Capito represents West Virginia and has held the senator role since 2015. The eighth graders were also greeted with a surprise at the Capitol when Vice President Pence and Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch appeared in the Rotunda. You can read what the Vice President said to our eighth graders in the Washington Post!
