Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, I think we can all agree that we are living through unusual times; indeed, I think it's accurate to say turbulent. As President Trump has gone about delivering on his campaign promises, he has heartened his base while inciting the opposition. If possible, we may be even more polarized as a nation than we were in November. In a stark example, the executive order banning immigration from seven majority Muslim countries has a lot of support nationwide – one poll found that 49% of Americans, a plurality, agree with the President's action; however, the order has also sparked widespread protest. It is in this polarized context that your daughters go to school every day and the context in which we try to educate them. It is an environment unlike any I have experienced in my thirty-plus years working in schools.
