March is Women's History Month, and we're obviously no longer in March. However, at Holton we do not confine our celebrations of women's accomplishments to a single month; we make it a perpetual activity. In that spirit, I share with you the results of a Women's History Month activity sponsored by the Girl Up Club. The Club stocked a table outside the Senior Lounge with post-its and markers and invited students and faculty to post the names of their female heroes and role models. People identified individuals as close at hand as teachers and mothers and as distant as Beyoncé and Michelle Obama. It warmed my heart that "My Mom" appeared more frequently (11 post-its) than any other name -- plus six other mothers were mentioned by name and someone simply wrote "mothers." Four grandmothers are also named (one twice) as well as a mother-in-law and a sister-in-law. Forty post-its featured 24 different faculty members while one collectively honored all the female leaders at Holton (which, of course, includes students). Three people named Pat Dooling, the beloved third grade teacher who died several years ago. The girls also frequently acknowledged each other either individually (28 post-its record individual girls' names) or collectively as a class; one person put "Holton-Arms students" on her post-it.
