Lower School and Middle School Chinese Teacher Dr.Liao shared with The Scene an artistic activity that cross-divisional Chinese classes took part in as a way to celebrate the Lunar New Year activities.

On February 2 and February 5, grade 5 to grade 10 students from Lower/Middle/Upper School Chinese classes participated in folk art workshop on dough figurine and paper-cutting decoration that play an important part in Lunar New Year festivities.

Ms. Mia Huang, master dough figurine artist, demonstrated that dough figurines is still a relevant and entertaining art form by working with students on Snoopy, everyone's favorite beagle. Students kneaded and pinched the dough into shape with excitement and amazement. To make the dough, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water in a mixing bowl. However, to make the kind of artist grade dough that Ms. Wang uses, plant-based gums as well as anti-corrosive and anti-cracking materials are added to achieve the texture and plasticity needed for sculpting work. Color pigment is kneaded into the dough that makes each handiwork a stunning visual treat.

Ms. Mindy Wang, master paper-cutting artist, started out with the basic by fastening several pieces of paper together, cutting the motif with scissors, and then folding the symmetrical design to make a three-dimensional display of a popular Chinese character for "spring" to express rejuvenation and joy. Usually, the artworks are made of red paper, as red is associated with festivities and happiness.
