Greetings All,
I hope that your week has been a good one. September has indeed been a busy month for us as we celebrate the first day of autumn. I have to admit that I possess a little bias for this season, but alas it is truly my favorite time of the year.
The weekend building hours for September 23-24, 2017 are posted below. Please note that provisions are in place for Capital Educators, Improv and other weekend activities. Once again there are a number of events taking place in our area. Down in "my neck of the woods" , the bi-annual Occoquan Arts and Crafts Festival is in full flight on Saturday and Sunday. I attended that event in the spring and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was great exhilaration when I was able to simply walk to those festivities. Those moments of aerobic activity were tempered a bit when I returned home carrying six bags of purchases.
We all know that at times I will share a story with you from beyond the Halls of Holton. One of the things that has always warmed my heart is having the honor to watch young people grow up into positive and fulfilled adults. When I think of my colleagues with long tenures in education, I know that this sentiment has to ring true. Just recently at a community event, I ran into a young man whom I first met years ago when I was a police officer. At the time he was a high school student at a D.C. Public School. The occasion was an appearance on behalf of the department as a participant in a discussion regarding Constitutional Law. That event hosted by law students from American University appropriately centered on Fourth Amendment issues. Ironically, at the time there were several local high profile cases involving allegations of police misconduct with regards to unlawful arrests. Those specific incidents had emanated from reports concerning illegal procedural acts being conducted on individuals within largely underserved communities. It should come as no revelation that the dialogue on that day was extremely contentious. There were many voices in that classroom who expressed dissatisfaction and distrust of the criminal justice system. One of the most prominent pleas came from a very engaged 16-year-old student. It was a joy to later discover that this passionate adolescent was now in law school himself. He unbelievably remembered me despite the passage of time. We shook hands and he proudly told me he hoped to intern one day at the Supreme Court. The resulting broad smile beaming across my face was undeniable. When one pauses to reflect, we can certainly correlate such important conversations to our contemporary times.
On behalf of the entire Facilities Department, I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend.
Take care my friends.
Ken
